Roundtables Are Where the Real Work Begins

by Julie Smithson

There is something powerful that happens when people come together in a room, not to perform, not to pitch, and not to compete, but to listen, share, challenge, and build.

That is the real impact of XR Women’s roundtables.

For years, XR Women has created space for women and allies across immersive technology, AI, spatial computing, education, healthcare, enterprise, gaming, and creative industries to connect in meaningful ways. But roundtables are different. They are not panels where a few voices speak and everyone else listens. They are working spaces. They are places where lived experience, industry insight, and real-world barriers are put directly on the table.

And then we ask the most important question: what are we going to do about it?

At AWE and across our global community, XR Women roundtables have become a catalyst for action. The conversations are honest. The challenges are real. Access, funding, visibility, mentorship, leadership, education, safety, policy, and opportunity are not abstract topics. They affect careers, companies, communities, and the future of this industry.

The value of a roundtable is not just in gathering people together. The value is in what happens next. The next action taken.

We need to move beyond inspiration alone. Inspiration matters, but action changes systems. A powerful conversation should lead to clear next steps, shared responsibility, and measurable outcomes. Who needs an introduction? What resource is missing? What policy needs to be challenged? What program can be created? What story needs to be amplified? Who is ready to lead?

XR Women has always been about community, but community is not passive. Community is active. It shows up. It makes space. It opens doors. It follows up. It gets things done.

The future of XR and AI will not be built by technology alone. It will be shaped by the people who decide how these tools are used, who gets access, who is represented, and who benefits. That is why these roundtables matter. They bring together the builders, educators, founders, creators, researchers, executives, and emerging leaders who are ready to turn conversation into movement.

The action points are clear: listen deeply, identify the gaps, connect the right people, create accountability, share resources, mentor generously, fund equitably, and keep showing up.

XR Women roundtables are not just conversations. They are working sessions for the future of immersive technology creating real world impact.

This is where trust is built. This is where collaboration begins. This is where we stop talking around the issues and start getting shit done. This is where governance is designed with human agency and the ability to deliver.
